Call it Tijuana's pequeño nod to the Mall of America, if you will. Just don't call it pequeño. Mundo Divertido aka Fun World houses some 30 rides and attractions: multiple rollercoasters, a swinging pirate ship, Ferris wheel, gokarts, laser tag, bumper boats, bowling alley, arcade, safari, haunted house, rockclimbing wall and a purple dinosaur mascot that bears a striking resemblance to Barney. Need we say more?
The afternoon starts off with lunch at a mall that's completely on the other end of the shopping spectrum: historic Mercado Hidalgo. A traditional open-air market in Zona Rio, for years it's been the city's one-stop shop for spices, cheeses, produce, herbal remedies, toys, piñatas, pottery and other miscellaneous housewares. After eating we'll graze the grounds and cash in on photo ops with the statuesque ceramic Virgen de Guadalupe up in Hidalgo's watchtower chapel.
The $35 ticket includes transportation from the border on Turista Libre's fun bus plus a pass for 22 rides at Mundo Divertido. The group meets on the U.S. side of the San Ysidro pedestrian border crossing at 1 p.m., with an estimated return to the border at 7 p.m. Meeting spot map.
