turista libre art gallery tour

On the agenda: border-inspired work by German photographer Stefan Falke at La Casa del Tunel, site of a former smuggling tunnel that now houses a contemporary art center 10 feet from the border fence; a collective showcase of internationally prominent local artists at Galeria 256 in the posh Via Corporativo, northwestern Mexico’s lone LEED-certified structure; Tijuana painter Enrique Ciapara’s “Emotional Landscapes” at La Caja, a former warehouse that tailors its openings with haute cuisine and live music inspired by the exhibit for a multidimensional sensory experience; and an optional stop at Pasaje Rodriguez and Pasaje Gomez, two downtown alleyways where empty storefronts are being transformed into independent galleries, boutiques and studios, revitalizing Tijuana’s urban core.

Tickets are $35 per person and include transportation from the border; lunch at Cielo organic eatery and water bar in Via Corporativo; and your experienced tour guide. The group meets on the U.S. side of the San Ysidro pedestrian border crossing at 1 p.m., with an estimated return to the border at 7 p.m.
